Ben and Arnoldo are sharing snacks. They have peanut treats and coconut treats. Ben ate 2 of the peanut treats and 4 of the coconut treats for a total of 160 calories. Arnoldo ate 3 of the peanut treats and 2 of the coconut treats for a total of 140 calories. They wrote the system below to represent the number of calories there are in the two types of treats. 2x+4y=160 3x+2y=140 They found the solution to be (30, 25). How many calories are in each treat?

Answer: There are 30 calories in peanut treat and 25 calories in coconut treat.

Explanation:

Given: Ben ate 2 of the peanut treats and 4 of the coconut treats for a total of 160 calories.

The equation corresponding to the above statement is

2x+4y=160

Also, Arnoldo ate 3 of the peanut treats and 2 of the coconut treats for a total of 140 calories.

The equation corresponding to the above statement is

3x+2y=140

i.e. x represents the number of calories in one peanut treat and y represents the number of calories in one coconut treat.

Also, the solution of system of linear equations is in the form of (x,y).

The given solution : (30,25)

It means there are 30 calories in peanut treat and 25 calories in coconut treat.
