A pure plant or a true breeding plant will have homozygous alleles for a given trait. An allele is one of the variant forms of a gene. Alleles result in the observable, physical characteristics or phenotype of an organisms. In Mendelian genetics, one allele is completely dominant and will hide the recessive allele from view. Homozygous organisms have two of the same alleles for the given trait. Homozygous individuals can ether be homozygous dominant, meaning two dominant alleles, or homozygpus recessive, meaning two recessive alleles.
