What is Hawthorne's argument regarding witchcraft in act 3

Hawthorne's argument in act 3 is that Mary Warren is lying when she claimed that she pretended to faint. He asked her for a repeat fainting performance. Hawthorne's belief is that if she had successfully pretend her fainting before, she can do it again. But she was not able to do it.
