After the Earthquake

Chapter 10 begins with life after the terrible earthquake and fires that destroyed almost all of San Francisco in 1906. Fires are still burning as the earthquake survivors make tents out of sheets and spare fabric in Golden Gate Park. The Tang people and the demons have to live together and figure out a way to rebuild their city.

Camping in Golden Gate Park

The people of San Francisco camp out in Golden Gate Park after the earthquake.

Camping in Golden Gate Park

When Moon Shadow and Windrider make it back to the Company's building, they are excited to see that it is still standing. Uncle tells them that he will stay and protect their home. But they realize that the fires are headed their way. The Company convinces Uncle to leave the building behind, and they all head to Golden Gate Park, where they set up a camp using customers' sheets from their laundry.

Moonshadow and Windrider find Miss Whitlaw and Robin, who are relieved to see them again. Soldiers who are supposed to be protecting the city have been looting, or stealing from places during times of war or riots. People are being shot in the streets for nothing. The men of the Company are at first nervous to have the demons in their camp, but they get to know one another and enjoy their time. Miss Whitlaw shares some plum brandy she has saved, and the Company members share their Tang food.
