The navy played key role by escorting the merchant ships.

The main reason why the United States actually entered the World War I was to protect its economic interests. Their merchant ships were constantly sank by the Germans because they were neutral and traded with everyone. This made US enter the World War I and its navy helped by escorting the merchant ships carrying valuable supplies.
