Japan and the United States had relatively good trade relations at the beginning of the 20th century. However, the involving of Japan in the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1930 meant the withdrawal of the United States of their current trade agreement and a further imposition of economic sanctions. This led to tense relations between both countries that escalated into an all-out war on December 1941, with the bombing of Pearl Harbor by the Japanese.
