Some third graders tell Mr. Jackson how many pets they have at home. Mr Jackson tells the third graders that a new student will be joining the class. Mr. Jackson asks the third graders to determine how many pets the new student most likely will have. How many pets do you think the new student will have?

The new student would most likely have about 2 or 3 pets.

One way to make a predication is by looking at the mean. If we add up all the pets, we have 48. Dividing 48 by the number of students (19) we get about 2.52. Since 2.52 is between 2 and 3, it is a safe bet that the new student will have about 2 or 3 pets.
