This is a quote from Martin Niemöller, right?

"Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me."

The author is most likely hoping to evoke the realization that if you see others being discriminated against as the Jewish were during the holocaust, you will be alone when the time comes the same happens to you. If you don't stand up for others and their rights, there might be no one to stand up for you and your rights when the time comes that yours are endangered.
