Set each binomial equal to zero and solve for your variable.

k + 1 = 0

Subtract 1 from both sides.

k + 1 - 1 = 0 - 1

Combine like terms

k + 0 = - 1
k = - 1

Same thing for the second binomial.

k + 5 = 0
k + 5 - 5 = 0 - 5
k + 0 = - 5
k = - 5

Your equation then has two solutions:

k = - 5, - 1
