The government owned all land, except for the land within the 13 original colonies and a few areas outside of them. This government-owned land was known as The Public Domain. This land was used in several ways. Some areas were given to soldiers who fought in the war in lieu of payment. Other land was sold at auctions in order to raise money for the government. However, this caused some conflict, as the prices were very high and the areas too vast. Speculators bought a lot of this land and sold smaller parcels to soldiers and farmers at a huge profit.
