No Child Left Behind Act was a domestic policy initiative by President George W. Bush which authorizes several federal education programmes administered by the states. States are expected to test students in reading and math in grades 3 to 8 and once in high school.
The aim of the act is to close student achievement gaps through the provision of a fair, equal and significant opportunity to achieve high-quality education with 4 major pillars.
i) Accountability where disadvantaged students are expected to achieve academic proficiency.
ii) Flexibility where school districts are flexible on how they spend federal education funds to improve student success.
iii) Research-based education that emphasizes educational programmes and practices
iv) Parent options that increase the choices available to parents of students attending Title I schools.
