1a - In general, in the Annexe, all the group are able to survive through tricks and adjustment and a lot of help from the employees. While the life in the annexe is not easy at all, due to the fact that they are a lot of people in a confinement space, they develop a routine to help them endure the difficulties of a life like that.

1b – As for the food, they receive it from their helpers. Then, they have to divide between all the people in the annexe, which cause a lot of conflict in the diverse families. The task of giving food grew more difficult with the passage of time, as the war reached its peak and the persecutions are always harder. Though, sometimes, in special occasion, they have extra food.

1c – There are several figures who help the people in the annexe. Victor Kugler, Johannes Kleiman, Miep Gies, and Bep Voskuijl were the only employees who knew of the people in hiding, along with Gies' husband Jan Gies and Voskuijl's father Johannes Hendrik Voskuijl. Those people risked their lives to protect the people in the annexe.

2a – if they required medical care, they have risked everything, so most sickness where cured in the annexe, with limited resources, in order to not put at risks the lives of the others. Natural cure as well as home made treatment were often the only chance to get a treatment in the annexe.

2b - As for food, medical care it was possible with very specific limitation due to the situation in which they were. It was easy to take some flu or stuff like that because they lived in a confined space with no external contact whatsoever. Generally, medical care was scarce and almost impossible to reach.

3. Anne describes the first wishes of the occupant of the annexe: Mr. and Mrs. van Daan wish for a hot bath. Mr Dussel would want to see his girlfriend. Mrs Frank desired a cup of real coffee. Mr Frank wants to see Mr Voskuijl. Peter wants to go downtown. Anne wishes for her family to have a home of their own again so she can move about freely.

4. Mrs Van Daam is described as belligerent and selfish, always instigates fights, rarely helpful. She's also jealous of Anne’s relationship with Peter. She is a trouble-maker who likes to criticize Anne’s upbringing, fight with Mrs Frank, store her own personal items and use the Franks’ instead and complain a lot.

5. Anne describes a "typical" day in the Secret Annex in several entries: in the morning, once it’s lunchtime in the office below, the Secret Annex can relax a bit, listen to the radio, distribute food. After Mr. van Daan gets served first, Mrs. van Daan gives everyone advice, Peter is quiet, Mr Dussel hogs all of the food. Anne At night they get ready for bed at 9 p.m., everyone waiting to use the sink, saying goodnights, Mr Dussel loudly shuffling around.

6. Because she had no other friend beside the people in the annexe, so the fountain pen becomes an image of a fantasized friends, someone which Anne can talk to and listen to her troubles and problems. She can trust in the pen just as much she can trust a friend.

7a Anne compares the group to mice. It is easy to see the metaphor here, as mice often are searched and not very welcome in houses, and so they are perceived by the society. Often mice are in traps, so the simile refers also to the situation in which they are currently into.

7b The annexe is referred to as "a little piece of blue heaven, surrounded by heavy black rain clouds." The rain clouds would be the dangers of the street. They could not escape their situation, so their annexe, while being their traps, is also their salvation and their piece of freedom, while the outside is dark and rainy.

7c At first, Anne thought that it was horrible but she started to like it little by little. This is a typical example of the adaptation skills we all humans are equipped with, and how time can change the perception of things even in the most difficult situation.

7d The simile explain their situation clearly and without misunderstanding. It is perhaps easy to understand the simile, which is an experience everyone can recall, then imagine yourself in the situation in which Anne is in. So, for us, it is clear how she feels because we can emphasize with her.
