During the 1970s and 1980s, Africa and Asia faced extreme famine leading to aid programmes that were considered as a temporary solution to the most appalling famines. The famines led to the loss of lives killing millions of people in Africa and Asia. Food prices increased while malnutrition was experienced. In Ethiopia for example, its estimated that 9,000 people lost their lives between 1984 and 1985.
