Answer: The principles of paraphrasing include summarizing what the speaker is saying to demonstrate comprehension, interest, and focus. Being "other" focused shows that the other person's interests are a higher priority than our own, including selflessness, trust, and generosity. Validating other people's emotions displays our empathy for how they are feeling and our ability to view things from their perspective.

The principles of paraphrasing are so that you can make sure you know what the person is talking about. If you repeat it back to them you know that you are understanding. It is really important to be 'other' focused because then they will respect you. Validating emotions also helps you make sure you know what they're talking about. ;)
