The Whigs tried to win support from the common man by making William Henry Harrison to be a humble man of the people. They portrayed his political opponent, President Martin Van Buren as a wealthy man who cared only for the well-being of the rich. In reality, it was Harrison who came from a rich and prominent family while Van Buren came from a poor, working family.
