Answer:
The need for transportation in humans, especially when distances got bigger, became aparent pretty early in history. Since the domestication of animals, and the appearance of wheels, up to now, transportation has always been a primary concern for human beings.
The methods of transportation throughout history have been many and varied, but most of them have sought to respond to the need to shorten distances in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible.
As such, two human creations have, in different ways, aided humans in achieving their goal of dimishing distances and being able to transport themselves, and their cargo: bikes, and automobiles.
In the case of bikes, the positive thing is that it is very cost effective, really cheap and it is affordable for almost anyone in the world. Aside from this, it is environmentally friendly. However, it cannot carry more than one person, and very little, to no cargo, and it completely depends on human power. It can go through long distances, but it depends on who rides it.
On the other end lies automobiles. This invention has been one of the greatest in human history, because it allowed not just the movement of people through very long distances, but it also allowed the transportation of large cargo, and a large number of people. It has been very benefitial for humankind, even if it has also had its downside with the environment and the fact that not all are cost-effective and they can be very expensive to maintain.
These are only a very few advantages of disadvantages that bikes and automobiles have had in history.
