In a position versus time graph -as the one you have-, the velocity (or how slow/fast some is going) is given by the graph's slope.

If the slope is large, the person is going fast, if the slope is small, the person is going slow, if the slope is 0, they're not moving.

We can clearly see that the slope of the Susana's plot compared to Anita's has a smaller slope before reaching t=3; so Susana starts slower than Anita.

We also see that Susana reaches the goal (x=5) at time ~5.2, and Anita reaches the goal until time ~7, so Susana wins.

The correct statement is: "Susanna starts out slower than Anita but sill wins the race".

The description which correctly interpretes the graph is : Susanna starts out slower than Anita but still wins the race

Using the parameters given;

Finish Time :

  • Sussana = 5.5 minutes
  • Anita = 7 minutes

After 3 minutes ;

  • Anita had covered 2.6 miles compared to Susanna who had covered just 0.5 miles.

Using these pieces information, we can conclude that susanna started slower as she covered lesser distance during the first 3 minutes of the race but still finished the race as the winner as she ran faster after the first 3 minutes.
