What does Darwin‘s theory suggest about living and extinct species? How did this tie with Darwin’s ideas about common descent?

According to the principle of common descent, all species--living and extinct--are descended from ancient common ancestors. This is Darwin's mechanism for evolution which suggest about living and extinct species.
