Frederik Willem de Klerk was the last Afrikaner Nationalist to be the President of South Africa in the era of Apartheid. He was president from 1989 to 1994 and he served as Deputy President from 1994 to 1996. He allowed anti-apartheid marches and freed the incarcerated anti-apartheid activists, among them Nelson Mandela. Together with Mandela, F.W. de Klerk and his government broke up apartheid and introduced universal suffrage. In 1993 he won the Nobel Peace Prize jointly with Nelson Mandela.
