A Soviet citizen might have said, "You think your nation made great sacrifices? The Soviet Union made a sacrifice 50 times what your nation did."
American deaths in World War II were almost all of military personnel, and the number of American killed during the war numbered around 416,000. For the Soviet Union, the number of military personnel killed was over 8 million, and perhaps as many as 10 million. And the total number of deaths of Soviets, including civilians, totaled over 20 million -- perhaps as high as 26 million.
The Soviet Union bore a far greater share of the sacrifices made in World War II than did its ally in that war, the United States.
