It could be a sign of preeclampsia, which is pregnancy condition characterized by high blood pressure and signs of damage to the liver and kidneys.
Edema or the swelling is usually a normal condition in pregnancy which occurs because of the excess fluid that collects in body tissues (retention of water), especially in ankles and feet.
