Nitrogen gas reacts with hydrogen gas to produce ammonia: ___N₂ + ___H₂ → ___NH₃ *not balanced. If 100.0 g of nitrogen gas reacts with 20.0 g of hydrogen gas what mass of ammonia will be produced?

Solution:

The balance chemical equation is as follow,

N₂ + 3 H₂ → 2 NH₃

First find out the limiting reactant;
According to equation,

28 g (1 mole) N₂ reacts with = 6 g (3 mole) of H₂
So,
100 g N₂ will react with = X g of H₂

Solving for X,
X = (6 g × 100 g) ÷ 28 g

X = 21.42 g of H₂

So, in order to consume 100 g of N₂ we will require 21.42 g of H₂, but we are provided with only 20 g of H₂, Therefore, H₂ is limiting reagent and will control the yield of product. Hence,
According to equation,

6 g H₂ produced = 34 g of NH₃
So,
20 g H₂ will produce = X g of NH₃

Solving for X,
X = (20 g × 34 g) ÷ 6 g

X = 113.33 g of NH₃
