During World War 2 the United States was most opposed to women working in the labor force in the defense industry. A remarkable number took over other office or factory jobs that had previously been held by men.
Before the war, paid labor was restricted to "traditionally female" professions i.e., typing, sewing and women were expected to leave the labor force as soon as they had children or married.
