What effect do large bodies of water have on climate?

A large body of water NEARBY produces a MODERATE climate.
That means a climate without extremes. The water soaks up heat
when the air is hot, and releases heat when the air is cold. So the
land that's nearby the water has days that don't get extremely hot
or cold.
