1:500,000 means 1 cm on the map is 500,000 cm on the ground
74 km= 74,000 m = 7,400,000 cm
1 cm on the map---- 500,000 cm
x cm on the map ---- 7,400,000 cm
x=1*7,400,000/ 500,000 =74/5= 14.8 cm
Neva river is 14.8 cm long on the map.
