The main reason is that they believed that Adams strayed away from the original concepts of Jefferson's ideas of the party. They believed that he took the party made by Jefferson and changed it into his own form of federalism which they dubbed the National Republicans. Not only was he disliked by them, but also by southerners because of his opposition to slavery.
