add 1 to both sides
plug in for the formula
simplify by multiplying and exponents
subtract then solve the square root
now solve for the plus and minus
(plus):
(minus):
so the answer would be -0.5 and -1

a = 2
b = 3
c = 1
x = [(-b +-sq root (b^2 -4ac)] / 2a
x = [-3 +- sq root (9 - 8) ] / 4
x1= (-3 + 1) / 4 = -.5
x2 = (-3 - 1) / 4 = -1
