Hello!

You use the Pythagorean Theorem to solve this

a^(2) + b^(2) = c^(2)

Put in the values it tells you

a^(2) + 1^(2) = (5)/(4) ^(2)

Square the numbers

a^(2) + 1 = (25)/(16)

Subtract 1 from both sides

a^(2) = (9)/(16)

Take the square root of both sides

a = (3)/(4)

The answer 3/4 or 0.75

Hope this helps!
