figurative language is a distinction within some fields of language analysis, in particular stylistics, rhetoric, and semantics. Literal language uses words exactly according to their conventionally accepted meanings or denotation.

Figurative Language is language used in a way that differs from its literal meaning. A reader it cannot interpret figurative language by thinking about the meaning of the individual words. To interpret figurative language, the reader must have understand the context of the text. Figurative language tells about the reader more about from the meaning of a text.

Example: Interpreting Figurative Language

A free bird leaps

on the back of the wind

and floats downstream

till the current ends

and dips his wing

in the orange sun rays

and dares to claim the sky.

Question: Read the stanza. What is the figurative meaning of the phrase "floats downstream?"
