This statement is false.

The Salem Witch Trials are an example of mass hysteria and not only a craze.

The infamous trials began during the spring of 1692. A group of young girls in Salem, Massachusetts, claimed to be possessed by the devil and accused several local women of witch craft.

More than 200 people were accused, 19 of them found guilty and executed by hanging.

This episode is the most notorious example of mass hysteria in Colonial America.

The guilty verdicts were annulled later and the families granted indemnities.
