Reason:

As it is cleared that during inspiration, the intercostal muscles contract, the ribs move upward. the diaphragm flattens and move downward. As a result the chest cavity become open and air move into it. However if the muscles of rib tears then rib will not raise. As a result there will be difficulty in inspiration/
