“Lost Colony” is one theory of Roanoke that has continued over the centuries, but no one has come up with a satisfactory answer.

Answer:

The first English colony established in the New World was Roanoke Colony, located on Ronaoke Island, which today is part of North Carolina. It was founded at the request of Walter Raleigh in 1585, although he himself had never visited the island. The first cohort of settlers returned to England after a year, and there were two further attempts to establish a permanent colony in 1586 and 1587, and both cohorts of settlers disappeared without leaving a mark. It's called the Lost Colony because of the mystery surrounding its fate. For a long time, it was believed that the settlers had been killed by Native Americans, but many historians now assume that they moved to another area and/or joined a tribe of natives.
