Three relations are described algebraically, in each, x represents an input (the independent variable) and y represents the output (the dependent variable.) Decide whether each is a function or is not a function. Explain why or why not.

1 -3x+8=y
2 y=x^2+3
3 y^2=x

A function is that y only has 1 solution for every x

-3x + 8 = y is a function because it only has one y value for every x

y = x^2 + 3 is a function because it has only one y value for every x

y^2 = x is not a function because it has two y values for x = 4
