Look carefully at the diagram. The shaded region represents 3/4 of the total area of the circle, which, in turn, is pi*r^2, or pi*(8 cm)^2.
Thus, the area of the shaded region is (3/4)*pi*(64 cm^2), or 48 pi cm^2.
