For this case we must find the area of each of the rectangles that form the rectangular prism.
We have then:

Rectangle 1:

A1 = (2) * (1) A1 = 2

Rectangle 2:

A2 = (2) * (4) A2 = 8

Rectangle 3:

A3 = (4) * (1) A3 = 4

Then, the prism area is given by:

A = 2A1 + 2A2 + 2A3
Substituting values:

A = 2 (2) + 2 (8) + 2 (4) A = 4 + 16 + 8 A = 28

Answer:
the surface area of the prism is:
28 square units
