A car covers a distance of 60 km in 3 hours. However, for the first 40 km it travels 16 km/hr. At what speed must it travel for the rest of the distance in order to complete the journey on time?

Explanation:

Given that:

Total distance covered in 3 hours = 60km

Speed during first 40 km = 16km/hr

Hence, time spent during the first 40 km ;

Recall:

Time = distance / speed

Time = 40 / 16

Time = 2.5 hours

Hence, speed required to cover the remaining (60 - 40) = 20km in (3 - 2.5) hours =0.5 hours

Speed = distance / time

Speed = 20 / 0. 5

Speed = 40 km / hr
