People disagree whether the United States should have gone to war against Mexico. These kinds of conflicts over land were happening all over the world during this time period as countries wanted more resources. Every time two countries had a land dispute, they basically sized each other up and would fight if they thought they could win. It was part of the world culture, not just the American way. If America did not go after the land, then another country would have.

In addition to land, they gained access to the Pacific ocean. They could then add this ocean to their trade route toward the East. This could have also be the start of something interesting for America; purchasing land outside of your main region.

People disagree whether the United States should have gone to war against Mexico. Should the United States have declared war? Consider information from the lesson and maps to explain your claim with at least two reasons.

The United States should not declare war on Mexico because in declaring war against Mexico, America most likely loses a possible ally in the future. Additionally, this conflict could inspire Mexico to stop all trade with the States, putting a dent in the economy.

Even though some people think that we should fight Mexico because of the murders on American soil, I think we would be smart to charge the people who committed those crimes, and not go to war over it. War is a big decision to say the least, and you don’t really know what bridges you could be burning.
