The significance of the conflicts between the Virginia and the Monitor was that it marked the first time two Ironclad warships met in battle. Additionally, it marks a major turning point in the advancement of navies.

Note: The CSS Virginia was built from the remnants of the USS Merrimack. This is why the event is often referred to as the battle of the Monitor and Merrimack.
