The two competing plans for representation were called the Vi.rgi.nia plan and the New Jersey Plan. The Vir.gi.nia Plan would help benefit larger states by suggesting representation be determined by the population of each state. Whereas the New Jersey Plan would help prevent the smaller states from being overpowered by the larger states by making representation equal among every state. The two plans eventually ended disputes when the Great Compromise was proposed and combined both plans. It was concluded that Congress would have two parts; the Senate, which would establish equal representation for each state; and the House of Representatives, which is determined by the population.
