The values of x and y that satisfy x y equals 0.42 and x plus y equals 1.3 is x = 0.6 and y = 0.7 or x = 0.7 and y = 0.6

Solution:

To find values of x and y , determine the factors of 0.42 and find which will have a sum of 1.3

Case 1:

xy = 0.42 = (0.1)(4.2)

sum = x + y = 0.1 + 4.2 = 4.3

Here we did not get a sum of 1.3

Case 2:

xy = 0.42 = (0.2)(2.1)

sum = x + y = 0.2 + 2.1 = 2.3

Here we did not get a sum of 1.3

Case 3:

xy = 0.42 = (0.3)(1.4)

sum = x + y = 0.3 + 1.4 = 1.7

Here we did not get a sum of 1.3

Case 4:

xy = 0.42 = (0.6)(0.7)

sum = x + y = 0.6 + 0.7 = 1.3

Here we got sum as 1.3

So the values of x and y are:

x = 0.6 and y = 0.7 or x = 0.7 and y = 0.6
