Nico wants to use a horizontal number line to compare 1 3/4

and 1.5. He is unsure how to do it and asks you for help. How would you explain the process?

Answer:

1 3/4 is greater than 1.5.

Explanation:

1. To make a line that measures 1 3/4, make 2 regular lines.

2. Divide one of the lines into 4 equal sections and erase the one section and leaving you with 1 3/4.

To make the 1.5:

1. Make a line and make another line but that is half of the length of the previous line.

Sample Response: 1 3/ 4 is equal to 1.75. I would plot 1.5 and 1.75 between 1 and 2, but 1.75 would be closer to 2. Since 1.75 is further to the right, it is greater than 1.5.
