A theater group made appearances in two cities. The hotel charge before tax in the second city was $500 lower than in the first. The tax in the first city was 6% and the tax in the second city was 9.5%. The total hotel tax paid for the two cities was $611.25. How much was the hotel charge in each city before tax?

Explanation:

Let the amount before tax at the first hotel be x

The amount at the second hotel will be x+500

:

0.065x+0.03(x+500) = 513.75

0.065x+0.03x+15 = 513.75

0.095x = 498.75

x = 5,250 this is for the first hotel.

The second hotel: 5,250+500 = 5,750
