For the first sample, he seemingly took a small group of persons. He might have taken approximately 10-15 random persons. Even though the number is relatively small compared to the total amount of people he could survey and didnt. The sample is randomized and the number is decent enough to make a decision.

For the second sample, not only did he surveyed a small group of students, but also a very specific one: the 5 honors math classes. That group of persons isnt very randomized and the way they think globally might differ to the way all the classes think globally. As a result, the survey results may end up being biased.
