A The frontier was a location where only the "daring, venturing as we go the unknown ways," who were the pioneers in the poem would be able to go as long as they were together in the dream for a better life and better place to live.

B. Pioneers established themselves in Oregon in the 1840s. They were very successful in farming. This caused thousands of people to move in to Oregon using the trail because they wanted to settle in the area south of the Columbia River.

C. The developments in this period challenged the pioneer to view an arise with the debacle of the Civil war,but at the same time be renewed after it as many again strived for new opportunities on the frontier.
