With the increased cotton trade between the north and south as well as high demand for cotton from all around the world, innovations in transportation and production of cotton increased especially in the north. The cotton industry nurtured a high use of industrial goods (ie. the steam engine) and factory labor to increase production. Other goods came later, but "King Cotton" allowed for industrial developments to increase production as a result of high demand.
