if u substitute the givens in the eqn we will get..

`2(2k + 1) - 2(k - 1) + 5 = 0 \\ 4k + 2 - (2k - 2) + 5 = 0 \\ 4k + 2 - 2k + 2 + 5 = 0 \\`

then collect like terms

`4k - 2k + 2 + 2 + 5 = 0 \\ 2k + 4 + 5 = 0 \\ 2k + 9 = 0`

`2k = - 9 \\ k = ( - 9)/(2)`
