1. A city street has four large apartment houses and fourteen private homes. What is the

ratio at apartment houses to Private homes ?

1. Write the information out as a fraction as fractions and ratios are the same thing. So it would be 4/14 (apartment homes/private homes).
2. Then you make the fraction as small as you can. So both 4 and 14 divide by 2 now making the fraction 2/7.
3. You can easily convert that to a ratio by adding a : instead of a / so now it is 2:7 meaning for every 2 apartment houses there are 7 private homes.
4. If needed you can divide it by 2 again to find the ratio of 1 apartment house to the number of private homes making the ratio now 1:3.5.
5. Always remember to read what the question is asking so in this case it is apartments to private homes so apartments come first in the ratio then the private homes.
