Answer:

x + y = -4.125

Explanation:

When you have a problem with wanting the answer to be negative, you must Add the 2 negative numbers.

-11/8 = - 1 3/8, 11/4 - 2 3/4.

You should take off the negatives for this problem, and just add fractions as usual.

We need common denominators, which is 8.

Our problem is:

1 3/8 + 2 6/8.

We add, 3 + 6 = 9 / 8.

1 1/8.

2 + 1 = 3 + 1 1/8 = 4.125.

Then, we put the negative sign.

Therefore x + y is correct since the value is negative, -4.125.

Best of Luck to you.
