One of the novel’s themes concerns the deceptiveness of outward appearances. How does the character of Myrtle Wilson illustrate this theme? On what basis does Myrtle choose the men with whom she becomes involved?

Answer:

Deceptiveness of outward appearance means that your appearance is misleading. Myrtle demonstrates this because according to Nick she is not very attractive and a little overweight, she is not a very faithful lover. She chooses men according to how gentle she thinks they can be.
