Two students were asked to graph the rational number -7.1. Amy states that the number is between -8 and -7, but Laura states that the point is between -7 and -6. How can you determine which student is correct?

Amy is correct because -7.1 is less than -7 but greater than -8. The interval Laura chose is too far right on the number line.

Answer: Amy is correct, -7.1 is between -7 and -8. We know this because in order for it to be in between -6 and -7, the number would have to be a decimal with a whole number of 6 (for example, 6.3 or 6.7). But -7.1 has a whole number of 7 so it is in between -7 and -8
